What kind of food and entertainment should there be at a one year old’s birhtday party?

M&C: What kind of food and entertainment should there be at a one year old’s birhtday party?
I am having my daughter’s one year birthday party at my house, there will be mostly adults and only 2 children. What kind of food should I serve and what should I do for entertainment. The party will only be for an hour to two hours long. Also what decorations do you recommend? Thanks.

Our family tradition for birthday parties of all ages has been hot dogs! The little ones can have just weenies with ketchup or just a weenie and the adults can have a big ole’ chili dog if they want! Plus, hot dogs are EASY! As far as decorations go, I would just decorate with balloons – since your child is only 1 they won’t want to pick out a certain character quite yet! You can give the balloons to the kids after the party! Have fun!

you shouldn’t select a ‘theme’…what does your daughter like… at one its hard to tell… but a favorite tv show/character… or the cinderella / snow white or just everything PINK… as for food, that depends on the weather where you’re at…. BBQ?… or a deli bar…. or just have desserts and punch…. keep it simple and within your budget… remember the party is about your daughter and celebrating her life…. not impressing everyone else!

If it’s that few of adults, just pick up some party platters. Or make your own. My sisters baby shower is tomorrow, and I’m taking kabob sticks and putting strawberries, pineapples, grapes, apples, and cantaloupe on some. Also cheese and Ritz crackers on some. And get some veggies. It’s not going to be that long, so that should be enough. Plus the kids can eat fruits and crackers and cheese too.

Not so many 1 year olds have actual ‘themes.’ But I’d say stop by the party supply store and grab some pink stuff, just balloons a happy birthday sign and table cloths.

I used finger-foods at my sons party, it is easier to play when you do not have to sit to eat! Your daughter will likely agree once she see’s her presents =P

If she has a favorite show, or a favorite kind of music I would have it playing. A few toys, balls etc. are always fun, and a bubble machine has always entertained all the babies I know!

Anything bright and colorful will make a good decoration. If the weather is nice and you can be outside, maybe set up some pinwheels?

Pizza, it’s the easiest and almost eveyone loves it.

No balloons-choke hazard. Also cut hot dogs lenthwise and then across so they don’t make a round serving that can (and does) block the throat and cause the child to choke. At that age-they don’t really notice what a theme is, just all the fun and festive decorations. I would do some fruit and veggie trays and maybe a sandwich platter tray from the local deli. When you order the cake tell them it is for a first birthday since most places will give you a free small cake for the child when you get the big cake (so they dont demolish the cake the guest eat).
