I was looking for a KOA in Montreal. I was following the directions, and went well past where the turnoff should have been. It was getting dark and I had to set up camp somewhere. I came upon an independent “campground” that was mostly a trailer park with a small area for campers.
The place gave me the creeps. There were lots of trailers, but no one in sight. There was a large barn next to the camping area.
I spent the night waking at the slightest sound and imagining myself hanging from hooks in the barn being tortured by deranged trailer park homicidal maniacs.
Next day, I packed up and left, continued on down the road, and came upon the KOA I had been looking for about 1/2 mile down the road.

A motel in Ohio whose name is long forgotten. We call it “that Ohio motel”. It was dirty, dark, the mattress were so bad we slept on the floor, it smelled dank and moldy. I remember it was blazing hot August and my dad asked the manager how to turn the AC on and the guy said” “it is on”. Oooooh, brother!Answer by ?
We had driven all night to take my step daughter back to her mother in Florida. After we left her off, we headed off for bit of a vacation before going home. We were caught in horrible rainstorms and my husband was so tired that we decided to check into a motel in Defuniac Springs Fla. The workers at the local Kentucky Fried where we stopped to eat said there was one right up the road. We should have kept on driving. We had to pay for the room up front (didn’t know most people paid by the hour!). There were mice pellets sprinkled on the carpet, roaches, the water in the bathroom ran rusty and the furniture was sticky. We grabbed a blanket and pillows out of the car, laid on top of the bed, slept restlessly for a few hours and took off as soon as possible to drive to a better destination. That’s been the worst I’ve ever encountered.Answer by scotgirl60
The absolute worst one was when we were extremely desperate — in Slough, England. It was a slum, but we were lost, it was well after midnight, we had a toddler with us and lots of places wouldn’t let us stay with her, and Ascot was happening, which we didn’t expect, so most B&Bs and hotels were completely full.
The man who answered the door had on a greasy tank shirt and was smoking a cigar. Need I say more?
It was terrible. We only stayed there about 4 1/2 hours and got up really early to leave and go have breakfast somewhere else before our flight home. We didn’t sleep under the blankets, and our little princess slept on top of my husband and I slept on top of his coat, which we left behind…!
Ew. It was so disgusting.
Answer by jst4patThis past March we stayed @ a R.V park in New Orleans..After we were settled in we looked around and discovered we were in a FEMA campground..we were ok with that until we came home from the French Quarter and 2 men were standing by our R.V. waiting for us. They were from out of state, one a police officer the other a fireman, and lived @ the same campground in their own R.V.s. They told us 2 trailers down from us was a drug dealer, and across from us the people would rip us off @ the drop of a hat..we were not to open the door to anyone as they would clean out that R.V. so fast your head would swim..we were to scream or make a lot of noise and these 2 men would come to our rescue..fortunately it was a very quite night and we left early the next morning..still quaking in our boots, but safe..Answer by Jillian
Once we stayed in a Dollar Inn near Columbus IN. My mom refused to sleep under the blankets and kept saying she was going to go sleep in the car. It was pretty dirty and moldy smelling. We kept expecting to see roaches crawling around.Answer by John O
It would be a toss up between the New Hong Kong Hotel in Port Angeles, WA or the El Pueblo Motel in Flagstaff, AZ. We had to disinfect the bedding at the New Hong Kong, and the air conditioning wasn’t working at the El Pueblo.
