someone: What is the kanji for “Happy New Year?” (making nengajo)?
I’m trying to make a nengajo for 2010, year of the tiger.
What is the kanji for it? Also, is the hiragana “akemashite omedetou gozaimasu?”

Yes, you´re right, one of the ways to say “Happy New Year” is “akemashite omedetou gozaimasu.”
In Japanese it is spelled like this: 明けましておめでとうございます
This phrase uses both kanji and hiragana.
Hope this helps.
新年、明けましておめでとうございます。 (shin’nen, akemashite omedetou gozaimasu)
or just
明けましておめでとうございます。
If you want to write “Happy New Year” only in kanji, you can put
謹賀新年 (kinga shin’nen)
or
恭賀新年 (kyouga shin’nen)
FYI, we usually stop giving out nengajou after the 15th of January, so you need to hurry!!! 🙂
