tastycorn333: What is the history behind curse words, and why are they considered taboo?
I was wondering to myself as to the history behind Curse Words? Why wouldn’t a word like element have the same connotation as any other curse word? I personally find them more like passionate words (when you want extra emphasis in a sentence) and I know they didn’t come from the Bible saying thou shall not say ____ or _____ or ______ etc… So I come to you Yahoo! Answers, whats the scoop behind these controversial words, and why does etiquette deem certain words foul?

Do a search on “history of profanity” for a number of sites that describe profanity and why it’s considered taboo in society. But, the common thread is that the words are derogatory in nature to a particular group (the “c” word to women, the “n” word to black people, etc.), as well as being blasphemous in nature (including violations of the commandment, “Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain”), or describing bodily functions (more vulgar forms of pee or poo, for example), bodily parts related to procreation, or vulgar forms of words that describe sexual practices (the “f” word, b-j, etc.) that are not appropriate for mixed company, around children, etc.Answer by LazyNoob
My teacher told me that the word “Fuck” (sorry about language) was developed during the Battle of Agincourt between France and England. The French had the English outnumbered and were making jokes on how they would cut off the middle finger of the Archer’s to make them useless. He said when pulling a bow back its called Plucking the U…or something. So when the English won the battle, whenever they would see a French solider they would stick up their middle finger saying Pluck the U. Eventually it was shortened to Pluck U, then Fu*k you.
Thats what he told use…it makes sense but I’m not 100% sure that this was true. So I’m guessing that curse words could come behind stories.
