DOW are large industrial stocks ( e.g., GE, GM), while NASDAQ are mostly for technology companies (e.g, Miscrosoft, Cisco)
The “Dow” generally refers to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and contains 30 stocks. It is an index.

The Dow 30 trades under the symbol: DIA

NASDAQ – stands for the “National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations” is a place where stocks that meet certain criteria can be listed for the public to buy and sell.

There is also a NASDAQ index under symbol: QQQQ

It would be incorrect to call the Dow as “large industrial stocks.” GM is no longer in the Dow. Very few DOW stocks are actually “industrial” now.
It would also be incorrect to call NASDAQ as “mostly for technology companies.”
MSFT, INTC, CSCO are major Dow stocks, and are NASDAQ listed.
HP and IBM are also Dow stocks, and are NYSE listed.
NYSE and NASDAQ Listing Differences:
The difference is that the NYSE has stricter capital and other requirements to be listed with them.
It is easier to be listed with NASDAQ than the NYSE.
These said major NASDAQ companies could be listed by the NYSE if they wanted to, but due to long time superstition, these companies have decided to stay listed on NASDAQ.
For example, in the later 1990’s MSFT had been wooed by the NYSE to be listed with them from NASDAQ and reserved the symbol “M” for Microsoft. Microsoft had declined the offer. M is now used for Macy’s stock.
To be listed with the Dow, this is solely up to the Dow Jones Company owners.
Answer by raysorAs already said DOW is an index (Dow Jones) and NASDAQ is a market where stocks are traded electronically.Answer by miki
the biggest difference you could say is that NASDAQ is a market where stocks are traded and DOW is a financial information company.
if you speak about the stock indexes, then DOW shows the change in the price of a basket of the 30 biggest companies IN the states, chosen by Dow&Jones
as NASDAQ, people usually mean the NASDAQ composite, an index where all the stocks traded on NASDAQ are included (more than 3000)
NASDAQ-100 index however includes 100 biggest domestic&international NON-financial companies
Answer by financegal27The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a grouping of 30 blue chip stocks equal weighted in an index.
The NASDAQ is a over the counter stock exchange, but the NASDAQ you often see referred to in market news is the NASDAQ 100 which is a grouping of 100 of the largest domestic and international non-financial stocks by market that trade on the exchange.
