dr. tini: What is the deal with job interview “homework assignments”?
Several jobs I have applied to recently required me to complete a “homework assignment” relevant to the job itself, such as reworking an outdated document or presentation. If I get the job, then great, some of my work is already done. But if I don’t get the job, will they use what I wrote? If they do use my work, is this even legal?

Chances are they are not asking you to do this so they can have some extra work done by an interviewee. Most likely they are looking to evaluate your skills and capabilities as it pertains to that specific piece of work.
Many companies employee similar tactics, even a day on the job, unpaid, to see how you fit in. It is all voluntary on your part, but if you want the job, take the assignment.
