feed it less carrots
The best thing to do is disallow him the ability to graze by putting him somewhere with no grass or in a stall, don’t feed him grain just hay, and exercise him. Exercise is the biggest part of it, though. Get him moving!Answer by CowGirl22
It’s usually hard to keep weight on a horse but ponies get fat FAST. You have to make sure they don’t eat too much grass. Go out and by a grazing muzzle so he won’t gain all the weight back when you make him lose weight in the first place. Secondly,if he’s fat you probably shouldn’t be giving him grain and hay,if there is enough grass it will keep the pony fast. Most importantly start exercising him.Answer by Alice K
Just put him in a small paddock (Perhaps section off a small area of your pasture with temporary fencing or something? ) with, ideally, no plant life, although if there are some weeds it’s fine too. Put him on a strict diet- I don’t know how large your pony is, but I’d say maybe 1-2 flakes of hay a day. If you don’t want to buy hay, just turn him out for 10-15 minutes a day or something in pasture. Don’t take away all his food, like the other said. Just because he is fat doesn’t mean he can’t starve- He won’t get nutrients from fat!
Then exercise him. You don’t have to get on- you can just longe him around for 10-15 minutes, 4 days a week or so. After awhile you can up the work time and work him 6 days a week, but don’t start out that way- You won’t burn any more fat, you will just increase the likelihood of him getting seriously injured. If you do longe him, remember to go evenly in each direction.
It won’t happen overnight, but he should loose weight. Make sure he has salt and water free-choice.
