What is the best way to handle a spoiled teenager?

shoptheflower: What is the best way to handle a spoiled teenager?
How do you handle a spoiled teenager who is generally a good kid, no smoking, drinking, hangining out doing the wrong things, etc.
Basic problems are being lazy (not doing chores), sassy mouth. Funds and priviledges have been taken away, but the child doesn’t care.

it will work in the long run. stop all money flow until they do their chorse, do not let them leave the hour until they make the daily requirements and if you have to take away their cell until they finish the chores. and if they back talk to you they’re not going out that day. that’d work with me lol

obviously not spoiled, just stubborn

make her get a job, have you spoken to her about applying for a job? (thats if she’s old enough to) thats common in all teenagers lazy, sassy mouth. and there is not much you can do but take away his/her priviledges each time he/she starts mouthing off or doesn’t do a chore take something that means alot to her, away from him/her (if you understand what i mean lol) if that doesn’t work, then do what she/he’s doing be lazy don’t do there washing, or dinner, or tidy up and see how long it lasts them (go out for the nite and leave the house a mess) if he/she has friends come over don’t tidy up leave the house a mess and hopefully they will be embarassed and sink in that they got to help out. goodluck they do eventually grow out of it

Give freedom based on how much the kid wants to take responsibility for himself – that means doing positive things (homework, decent grades, Saturday job, etc) as well as staying out of trouble. Set some weekly requirements as a condition for going out, getting cash – and stick to it.

Consider making volunteer work mandatory.

Kind of sounds like me when I was younger. I was a good kid like you say… I’ve never smoked a cig in my life! I wasn’t really spoiled because I started working really young and always had the money to buy whatever I wanted. I was lazy when it came to school and housework though. And everyone knew I was a “smart ass.”

Getting involved in some kind of volunteer work (homeless shelter, elementary school classroom helper, tutoring for free, humane society…..) may help open your teens eyes to those less fortunate and perhaps make him/her a little more well rounded.

My mother encouraged me to spend time in an elementary school classroom… she saw my love for kids and so we called my brothers old 2nd grade teacher (who he had really liked) and I went in everyday after I got done with classes, and helped with the kids. I loved it, and spent over 150 hours there during that year.

take away her cell phone and tell her/him tht they can’t go on the computer until chores are done, then you get your cell phone back.

Give her a spanking.

Hey that teenager sounds like me!!! lol. Usually my mother just gives me one threatening look and a firm lecture that makes me feel guilty and I’m off the couch and washing dishes.

Don’t want to scare you, but these are symptomatic of drug taking. I would take him/her to the doctor and ask him to administer a test without him/her knowing what it is for. After all if the child is not hooked you wouldn’t want them to know of your suspicions.

make her get a job! its time she pay and learn how much stuff cost

Answer by biha12
Make the kid get a job or take him to a homeless shelter and or such to do volunteer work and force him to see how lucky he is.

For sassy mouth, a backhander is a good response.

And for laziness, just keep up with no money and no privileges…eventually it will sink in.

But every time the kid does respond then make sure they get rewarded somehow….even it it is only verbal praise for a good job.
