Randy Gant: What is the best music notation software for composing and playing music tracks live from my computer?
I am a musician and I want to compose music on my computer to perform with and play live. I have been given two music notation software products. Cakewalk “Sonar” and and Band in a Box. Which one is best for compsition as far as chord creation, instrument parts and music notation?
Any reviews from anyone?

I’ve been using Noteworthy Composer for many years now, and found it very useful for writing multiple instrument parts, as you can hear back what you’ve written. You can use the computer keyboard for note writing very easily. There’s also a good support community for it, and it’s very reasonable priced and a comparatively small download. You can download a free trial and see if it fits your needs.

Neither are really very good at creating sheet music. Band In A Box is mostly for you to create quick and dirty backing tracks, and Sonar is a basic DAW.
Finale and Sibelius are the real deal when it comes to publishing sheet music, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to compose in them.
You’re basically asking about some very different things, and neither of the products you mention is really good at any of them.
Send me an e-mail with more detail about what you’re trying to do and I’ll help you out.
