phoenixed: What is the best gender of kitten to get if you have an adult male cat?
okay, I have one adult male cat and want to get a kitten. what is the best gender that would work well? I want both cats to get along with eachother as smoothly as possible. they will both be neutered/spayed of course. so, should I get a male kitten or a female kitten? will the two males be too territorial? or will they be just fine together? and will a male and female cat be less tense?

I would say a female, but would still get her spayed.
you could get a male with probably no problem, but usually it is better to have less males and more females just in case you do get ones that are territorial.Answer by KuroHikari
From a behavior perspective, it’s usually better to introduce a female into the household if the resident cat is a male. However, if you have a male kitty in mind to adopt, don’t let it stop you. Since your current cat is a neutered male, another male may work out just fine. It’s honestly going to be up to your current cat…if he likes the new addition, all will be well regardless of the gender of your new kitty. Be sure to give your adult a lot of attention so he doesn’t feel left out…it seems to make the transition a little easier.
