Vegans R Hottt: How do you keep a pet bird cool in the summer? How hot is too hot for a pet bird?
How hot is too hot for a pet bird? I have a parakeet and a cockatiel that live on the top floor and they have their own room to fly around in (they would rather not be in a cage). It is going to get 100 today and all I have in there room is a window fan. I will be gone most of the day and want to make sure they will be ok. Does anyone know how hot a parakeet and cockatiel can be without them overheating. Any tips, ideas? Thanks!

i have a cockatiel also, and there tropical birds so they like the warmth, but mine hates it and spazzzes out. it sleeps in my head directly in front of a air conditioner, so i would bring it downstairs, give it ice water, keep a fan on it, and dont cover the cage.
Birds have been able to stand changes in temperature, because their body temperture is higher than ours. However, usualy when it is too cold or too hot for us, it is usualy always too hot or too cold for your bird too. Make sure your bird is kept out of windows and where the sun isn’t hitting the cage.
First you should be able to notice any signs of over-heating with your birds:
• Feathers are slicked very close to the body. He appears very smooth.
• Wings are held away from the body, allowing air to circulate around him.
• The bird may be panting, breathing heavily.
Some things to keep your bird cooler are:
Give him a bathtub. Birds love to bathe. By offering him a bathtub, he can keep himself cool and maintain his glorious feathers at the same time. It is most entertaining to watch a bird splash and play in the water. When the water gets stale, replace it with fresh. Never give ice cold water, as tepid to mildly cool is the best. A fancy store-bought tub isn’t necessary. Many times a margarine tub will work just fine.
Keep a spray bottle handy. Some birds love being misted, while others hate it. Never mist a bird that doesn’t like it, and never use water as a form of punishment. Never directly spray on a bird, and never use a spray bottle that has had chemicals in it, even if it has been cleaned out. Always keep the spray bottle with water only. By spraying above him and allowing the mist to fall on him, he will feel as if he is in a dewy rainforest. Nobody enjoys being sprayed in the face, and neither will he.
Take care with air conditioning: Sometimes air conditioned rooms can get a little too cold and have an opposite effect on a pet bird. It is best to keep him in an evenly tempered room. Never take him from a hot room to a cold room. This is both uncomfortable for him, and may even make him sick.
Indirect fans: Fans are a great way to keep a bird cool. The best way to keep a bird cool with fans is by using indirect cooling. Never point a fan directly on a bird. Also, if a pet bird enjoys time outside his cage, be sure all ceiling fans are turned off or it could spell disaster.
Answer by A Random PersonKeep them in the most cool place in your house. A room with the blinds/curtains closed and the room temperature is about 70 degrees. When you get home, give your bird a nice bath (only if the sun is still out, though).
