I think traditionally it was only laid over the bride on the wedding night but sometimes more. It’s basically a sheet/dress with a hole over the vagina for the man to insert his penis. I’m pretty sure its to emphasize the formality of the whole affair and that they aren’t there for love.

No one really practices hole-in-the-sheet sex, it’s an urban legend. Since it’s not really a tradition, it probably doesn’t have a name.
