If you live in London the world is yours and there will be so many different dance schools to choose from.
Modern was created by I.Duncan and it was originated to oppose Ballet. Modern focuses on individuality and naturalism, which is why most of the time it is done barefoot.
Jazz is useful for Musical Theatre and is very energetic with Pirouettes and Big Leaps.
Watch video’s on youtube or vist one class of each to watch and see which you like best.
Jazz is very energetic and fun, while Modern is more flowing and it usually done barefoot. Checkout Wikipedia, they have articles about both types of dance.Answer by Colie
First of all, do modenr. I absolutley LOVE it.
Basically to understand modern, you need t know some history of dance. Ballet was invented by men and performed by all men for about 200 years. At the time that women started doing ballet, if you were a dancer, you were either a beuatiful ballerina, or prostitute. The, in the mid 1800’s, Loie Fuller began “skirt dancing” using elaborate costumes with floor length flowing skirts that moved when she danced. She would twirl them around and show a lot of leg as she performed. At the time this was very scandalous, but as time went on, it became the root of all modern dance. After Loie, modern dance became a huge pattern of doing exactly the opposite of what the dancers teacher taught them. One of the most well known modern dancers, Martha Grahm, still has many of her techniques being used today, as well as many others. Today modern dance, is a huge combination of all the different evolving styles in the past hence it is sometimes called contemporary, although that is actually a dance form of its own.
I do not know as much about jazz, however it is not as deeply rooted in ballet, although it is somewhat. It is the only dance form to originate in America. Jazz has vastly different techniques from modern dance. It isn’t something you can really explain by words, but its different.
I do both jazz and modern dance but and recommend that you take both, but if you were to choose one, I would say modern.
