Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin from the tip of the penis.
I believe it is only really required in Judaism, as a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham.
Answer by Smiling JWRemoval of the foreskin that shroud the glans of the penis and it is performed in Judaism. It was a sign of the covenant and an identification of men who belong to Israel. It is performed as a religious practice on Jewish eight day old babies. This incidentally is when vitamin K which aids blood clotting is high in the the baby’s blood. Another remarkable Bible fact.
Though Christianity no longer requires operation on the male genital the religious Jews of Judaism have been performing circumcision since Abraham was given the covenant.Answer by Allen

I can’t answer many of the religious questions… but I wouldn’t have it done to my kid!!!
Answer by TheresaThe other two answers address male circumcision. In some cultures female circumsicion is practiced, which involves cutting the clitoris and vulva off to prohibit the female from experiencing sexual pleasure. It is usually practiced on young girls by family members (ie without proper medical attention) beause of the mistaken belief that Islam condones the practice.Answer by Bobby Jim
Besides Judaism, circumcision is also a requirement of Islam, they too trace their heritage back to Abraham.Answer by Gis
male genital mutilation, the only conceivable reason for doing this is to reduce sexual pleasure.Answer by The_Doc_Man
Ouch. OK, I’ll try to answer plainly.
On an uncut penis, there is a tubular “sleeve” of skin called the foreskin. When having sex, this skin naturally pulls back to expose the tip of the glans penis, which is very sensitive.
However, when the foreskin is forward, as it would be when not used for sex, it hides that tip and provides a natural pocket for bacterial growth as well as accumulation of other material best not accumulated.
Before we knew anything about hygeine, it was the ancient Jewish custom to remove the foreskin in a circular cut called a circumcision (from Latin circum = around, and cisio = to divide, split, or rend, from the irregular verb scindere for which the participle form is scissus – which looks like the source of the word “scissors”). This reduced the occurrence of many diseases. In fact, if I recall this correctly, women had higher rates of vaginal cancer if they had sex with uncircumcised men. Men also had more diseases of the penis if not circumcised.
The early Israelies and Christians all the way through to this day have followed the practice of circumcision. I am not sure about Moslems.
In modern times, we know enough about the germ theory of disease that we understand the need for cleanliness. Therefore, it is possible that from a disease standpoint, circumcision is no longer necessary. I have seen some articles about people trying to get it outlawed. I do not know the status of their efforts except that they haven’t succeeded in outlawing it yet.

Circumcision is the removal of the parts that make up the foreskin in males and the removal of the labia and clitoral hood in women (note there is also an extreme Female Circ that removes part of the clitoris).
Many consider female circ (FGM) to be worse, but actually male circumcision (MGM) as practiced in the US removes more errogenous tissue — over 20,000 nerve endings. The male circ takes away fine touch and stretch nerve endings and changes the dynamics of sex. Men and women can usually orgasim after both FGM and MGM, but with less overall pleasure.
Judiasim and Islam both practice MGM with some Islamics doing FGM. Several African cultures practice MGM and FGM. There are many claims of medical reasons to do both (HIV risk reduction from MGM AND FGM), but this has not been observed in the US.
Many say that it originated with Abraham, but it was actually practiced many years before. The middle east based religions (but NOT Christianity) practice it as a tradition. It is typically viewed as a sacrifice to God and is also acknowledged to harm sexual pleasure (as part of the sacrifice).
There are good sources out there, but note those pushing for the GM are often just trying to keep the tradition going. So don’t trust the circ pushers. No medical organization recomends either mutilation.
Somone above said : “Christians all the way through to this day have followed the practice of circumcision. I am not sure about Moslems.”. This is not at all correct. Christians do not practice it for religious purposes (most Christians have natural unaltered genitals). IN fact, it is against Catholic teachings to circumcise.
Answer by UmezWell circumcision is about cutting foreskin of main organ of men (when they are children) ……
