In a truly Islamic society women have the following rights in Islam:
1. The right and duty to obtain education.
2. The right to have their own independent property.
3. The right to work to earn money if they need it or want it.
4. Equality of reward for equal deeds.
5. The right to express their opinion and be heard.
6. The right to provisions from the husband for all her needs and more.
7. The right to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.
8. The right to obtain divorce from her husband (note that God deeply frowns upon divorce as a solution unless there is hardly any other alternative)
9. The right to keep all her own money (she is not responsible to maintain any relations).
10. The right to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.
11. custody of their children after divorce.
12. to refuse any marriage that does not please them
and more…
Good and bad are in every society. There are people who follow Islamic teaching and treat their women like a pearl and there are people who don’t follow Islamic teach and treat their women like crap.
Islam gives women more right then any other religion. Pick up the old testament and tell me if I am lying, (Leviticus 15:19-30),(Leviticus 20:18) women who are on their period are to be considered un-holy and the things they touch become un-holy as well!! No such concept in Islam.
**Muslim women are not submitted to man, all muslims are submitted to God
—–
Quran [2:112] Indeed, those who submit themselves absolutely to GOD alone,
while leading a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their
Lord; they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

Islam is not a name. Islam means Submission to God alone. Muslim is an Arabic word that refers to the person who Submits to God alone. Submission involves an active daily process of remembering and worshiping God alone.

Well in a Real Islamic society unlike the one that is al-qaida influenced, they receive alot more rights than what you are used to hearing. Did you know that the husband cannot force the wife to cook for him? It is true and also the husband is not allowed to force them to clean either rather they do it out of their generosity. Reason I bring this up because people get the impression that the wife is supposed to do everything the husband asks if not he beats her. The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him never beat his wives. In fact He said “the best of you are the best to their wives”. In his final sermon, which may be translated as this: O people: verily you owe your women their rights, and they owe you yours.
The disgusting way the women are treated by extremists groups or men without Religious knowledge who have a inferiority complex should not be blamed on Islam as a whole.

Islam protects the right of man and woman, young and old, just because you saw or heard something about Islam in the media does not means it is the teaching of Islam.
In fact, during the time Qur’an was revealed, women in all religions have been treated badly. Prophet Muhammad teach us to correct that situation based on revelation by God. I’m not going to list every single things that shows Islam respect woman as I am sure that is not what you have in mind when you asked this question.
