Theresa Williams: What is a good song for a musical audition?
Hi everyone, I have an audition in two weeks and we have to prepare two songs that contrast, a more up-beat son and a slower song. I think I know what I’m going to sing for the slow song (The Rose). Also the songs have to be from a musical, and the teachers would like either song to be like the musical’s songs. The musical is Little Shop of Horrors. Please help! I’m nervous as it is.
P.S. I’m an alto, or a mezzo-soprano.

Well I am a theatre geek. You don’t want to do any popular or new musical pieces. I would not suggest singing “The Rose” because it is not a showtune. I am also a alto/mezzo-soprano, some of the songs I have sung for auditions in the past have been:
“Cabaret” from Cabaret
“Nothing” from A Chorus Line
“Diva’s Lament” from Spamalot,
“Happily Ever After” from Once Upon a Mattress
“Safe in the City” from Taboo.
“In My Own Little Corner” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
Those are only a few that I can remember since I have done many auditions. Don’t forget, when auditioning for a musical, you’re not just singing a song, you’re acting it. All of those songs above have great acting possibilities.
If you don’t like any of the songs I’ve suggested, you can also go to https://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com for ideas.
Hope this helps, and break a leg!
Answer by DonnaAre you auditioning for Audrey or for one of the trio of girls? It makes a difference as to what songs would be appropriate.
Whatever part you’re auditioning for, I would NOT use “The Rose.” The song, while good to listen to on the radio, is not a great choice for an audition because it doesn’t show any range and repeats the same theme over and over, with no bridge or key change or anything of interest. It’s also not evocative of the late fifties-early sixties, which is when “Little Shop” is set.
Songs you might consider:
“One Boy” from BYE BYE BIRDIE
“Freddy My Love” from GREASE
“Good Morning Baltimore” from HAIRSPRAY
“Raining on Prom Night” from GREASE
Good luck.
