James Oswald: What interests and excites you about the subject of Economics?
I am really interested in Economics because I get an understanding of how society works. How our lives are influenced day to day, and the theories and market forces behind them. I see these everywhere – and to learn about them in depth, intensifies my observation of matters such as the amount of people going into one coffee shop, the quality of a car in comparison to its manufacturer’s capacity, which I enjoy doing.
What do you guys enjoy about economics? Why did you decide to do it at university? What would you say to an admissions officer if they asked you this question?

The rise and fall of those with more money than me. I am jealous of how some people or companies are making lots of money seemingly effortlessly, and how hard and fast they fall when they screw up.
It’s also interesting to read the business pages to find out, like you said, how society and business works in real life. I was not an economics major, but you learn a lot about business trends, small-town small businesses making good in a tough neighborhood, and what to focus on in the future in insecure financial times. I don’t play the stock marke, but right now I would be investing in stable shelf products such as Coke and Pepsi, food companies such as Lucerne Foods and Proctor and Gamble (suppliers of everyday items like coffee, diapers, and toothpastes and soaps), and future technology like greenhouse food production, solar power (is going to get BIG), hybrid cars, and small-market food growers and suppliers.
If I had money, that’s where I would put it. Just going off what I am learning in ag classes and reading the newspapers every day. It will be interesting to see how this latest drought in California will affect food production and supplies in the near future. And Wal-Mart is stable right now, but a crash may be coming unless they address their customer service issues and start treating their employees fairly right away.
