What exactly does the expression “to make love” mean?

Elvis Rules!!: What exactly does the expression “to make love” mean?
I always understood it to mean to have sex with someone you love. But lately I’ve seen old movies that have used that expression and under the context of the dialoge the movie characters are having, I don’t think they are talking about sex necessarily.

well i think it generally refers to doing sex with someone, liek a euphemism

but someone culd use it another way but it wuld be rare and it wuld be incorrect, thx

well i think its like when you go to bed with somebody and you might not really like them that much or you really like them you just dont love them, and after the deed you think wow they were really good and now you love them

i think they are talking bout sex. but who knows? (shrug)

personally i use it to refer to loving sex. like hard sex or having sex for the sake of it or recreationally would be sex but (slow) sensual sex would be making love.
