Desiree: What do you think about children being taught the difference between dogma and reality?
To rational adults (not religious people), the difference between dogma and reality is quite obvious. But to children who still believe in Santa, God and the Tooth Fairy, the difference between dogma and reality is not easy to determine. Children rely on adults to teach them about reality but if adults are teaching children about Santa, God and the Tooth Fairy, then this can’t be doing them any good, right?

You would first have to know what reality is.

For me, I will not tell my future child (if I have one) such lies like Santa, the Easter bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc. There are better ways to discipline your child.
But for religion, I will just teach my child rationality and science and let them decide for themselves.Answer by svnthdysthsbbth

it didnt do me any harm. actually, when my parents told me there was no santa, i had already figured it out by myself. but it did stimulate my imagination and it made me unbelievably happy each time i saw those presents under the tree. my parents tried to teach me about god, as well, and i dont believe in him/her/it either. granted, they didnt really try to force me to believe as they believe, but i also think most people are just like my family, where children arent forced into anything. my parents have always supported my own decisions and often joke about how my grandmother is very spiritual (she still doesnt know i dont really believe) and i’m a unbelieving heathen. its all a question of environment, as everything in life is.Answer by Western Walls Will Never Fall
Reality is only an individuals belief, details are mere opinion.Answer by Drakestone
The question has no meaning while non-rational people are still part of the decision process about what are children are taught. There are still school districts that refuse to teach Evolution, because it is only a theory, and want pray as part of the school day.Answer by Dear Dogma
A dogma is a reality.
It is a core belief or principle retained by an individual, and like it or not everyone has them.
Some people just have them written down is all.
Answer by Meister9I don’t necessary believe dogma is not reality. This is a bit like leading the witness.
Pretending is an important part of childhood. It marks the difference between creative adults and boring drones. Are you talking about censureship? Should we remove all the non fiction books and only discuss lofty topics like politics and science?
. We didn’t lie about Santa or the Easter Bunny. We did make up a car snake who lived in the car and ate French Fries and who could never leave the car because he was banished there for bad behavior,This was before dvd players in the van and a way to pass the time on long trips.
As long as you are clear about what is pretense and what you believe to be true., I see no lasting trauma in my offspring.
Kids grow into adults who make their own decisions .Answer by Jesus Chrysler
That’s a good point. It’s cute and fun and all that, but it’s probably not a great idea to condition children to believe in fictional beings starting with Santa and the Easter Bunny and culminating with God and Jesus.Answer by lobo
