Britt: What could be the reason behind painful intercourse and clitoris swelling?
Every time I am intimate with my husband, any penetration is beyond painful, my clitoris swells, and it’s almost as if my opening closes off and makes it pretty much impossible for intercourse.

This sounds very much like vaginismus.
Vaginismus is much commoner than people usually realise, but it tends to be more characteristic of casual sex than sex in a committed relationship.
You will have to see a doctor. Creams often help, but counseling is sometimes necessary.
