u can make new friends and develop a new talent playing on a team helps u meet new people and it gets u closer to people because u have to be able to trust your teamates for example if your playin softball and your teamate says shes got it then back off and trust that she will catch it. it will also develop an bon d because u have to talk to your teamates in order to win
in a school sport, kids from the school see you playing. and example would be the star football players being very popular. also, you grow closer friendwise to kids on the team (when you go to an away game, theres not much to do but talk, or work on homework, and if its dark coming back, then only talking. you get inside jokes with members of the teams, which of course gives you something to talk about, and when their friends (opposite sex notices, possible relationship, same sex notices, more friends your acquainted with.
also you have a chance to make friends with your coach, or even kids from another school
