gum: What are some great gift ideas to give parents of a newborn baby or a child?
A bunch of my friends are starting to have kids now, so I want to give them a gift that is really useful and thoughtful. I usually fall back on either a bib, little baby clothes, onesies, or a gift certificate to Target. Is there anything more unique or more useful I can get the parents? Are there any customized gifts that are good? Since I don’t have kids, I am clueless! Thanks!

Recommend Pampers Swaddlers. They do not leak. No sales tax and 2 day shipping. Cheaper than local stores. Pampers newborn diapers are the best hands down. Love the yellow stripe on diaper that indicates whether baby has urinated – male or female, works great and super convenient.
* A premium diaper designed for new babies up to 10 lbs
* Total Care with mesh Absorb-Away Liner helps keep messes away from baby’s skin
* Quilted blanket-like softness and stretchy sides
* Umbilical cord notch
* Fun designs feature Sesame Street characters
When I had my daughter, a friend of mine gave me a gift certificate to the portrait studio at Sears to get her 1st pics taken. I thought that was awesome. Very unique, I have never seen that given as a gift. Then you are guaranteed to get a picture too since you contributed to them.Answer by Joanne ๐

*the offer of food for when the family comes home from the hospital. We had a few friends bring us meals that could be reheated for a couple different meals and it was so wonderful to not have to think about cooking!
**A gift certificate or membership to a place that does pictures. Ask friends who have kids for advice about places that do good baby pictures
**Gift certificate to Target or a warehouse club where they are members. These were great for us too when we had to buy formula or diapers.
**You could offer to come to the house after the family comes home and do things like vaccuum; dust; do laundry; load the dishwasher etc etc. These are all little things that get lost in the shuffle when you come home with a new baby.
Answer by assassinatebut I say diapers, diapers, diapers. If there’s one thing you always need its diapers, and wipes. Also, if they are not breast feeding, you could find out what formula they use.
Bath stuff, baby shampoo, powder, are all things they need every day. Do they have a nice baby travel bag? Or a bouncy seat? When my daughter was living with us with her new born that musical bouncy seat is the only thing that got us through dinner time!
Feeding spoons, baby dishes and bowls, pacifiers, bottles are all things they use every day, and usually have to replace.
Try to think of the things your friend needs every day, and continuously have to be replaced (that’s why I’m a big advocate of the huge packs of diapers and wipes!) You could put together a gift package of all those things they run out of that are necessary.
Answer by dwarvesAs you said you can get them bibs, receiving blankets, onesies, socks, hats, cream for diaper rash, toys, nuks to soothe them…they even have ones that when you place the nuk in the babies mouth it will register a babies temperature if they’re sick. There’s also a little rubber duckie you can put in the tub which registers the bath water temperature. There are mobiles, Baby Einstein CD’s. Toys that they can grab onto when they get older. I even saw and bought …was it a teddy bear or bunny rabbit…that when turned on simulated the sounds of the mother’s womb!!!
For my great nephews we started them off with a savings bond. You can buy the regular kind where you might spend $ 25 and it would then be worth $ 50. We do this for birthdays and Christmas. Their moms and dads love this as they can stash it away for when the boys go off to college there are the bonds that will have matured in value by that time!!!
Hope that gave you some ideas!!
Answer by conacreMaybe a hot and cold platter. It’s plastic more or less, and you fill it with warm water to heat baby food. Knew that one already? A bag to hold all the babies goodies is nice, and believe it or not, diapers. You never have too many of those; wipes, clothes, blankets and maybe a savings bond the baby could use when they are older, or the parents need if they are running low.Answer by dizwar

The problem about baby gifts is that really they will have so much stuff for the baby that it can not possible wear or use it all… go for something original and creative. I got my sister a voucher to have her first nice family photo painted. She has not done it yet as she is so busy right now but they have nice photos so I might actually remind her to get it done soon. Check it out if you like:

absolutely the best baby gift hands down is a diaper cake. First of all it wont get thrown in the garbage 4 days later like flowers and balloons, but most importantly every item from the diaper cake is going to be useful to the new parents and it makes a great centerpiece in babys room or baby shower.
this place has some of the unique diaper cakes i have seen

Newborns – DIAPERS DIAPERS AND MORE DIAPERS. I know it’s boring, but it is VERY useful. Diapers are expensive and babies go through a TON. They are also ok if you get the wrong size, because they are very easily exchangable with or without a receipt.
Fantastic gift for toddlers – they have music CD’s and books that you can order personalized with the children’s name. Like my daughter (2 years old) has an Elmo CD that says “Come on Mia, let’s play a game!” and she just LOVES it. She will listen to it over and over again…
My oldest (five years old) has many books that are personalized with her name printed into the story and she just thinks that is cooler than snot. ๐
Also a really nice gift that I have been given in the past was blankets and pillowcases with the children’s names embriodered along the edges. It was very nice, and I knew they had put some thought into it. Don’t know if you know anyone who does sews, but you should be able to find several shops that do it on commision as well.
Good luck to you! Hope I helped…. ๐
