Wyndell R: What are some good networking skills/tips that you have used in the work-world?
I have been working with career counselors to improve my networking skill. I found that I am very skilled at improving a company & its operations but not myself and wanted to know if there were any ‘tips’ that anyone can provide in this area.

Brush up on your subnet masking and TCP routing tables. This will benefit you in networking.

The most important thing about networking is getting yourself out there. Get back in touch with old school mates that are now in the business as well, join some associations and attend their meetings, and remember to always take your business cards with you. You never know when you’ll need them. Networking opportunities provide themselves in pretty much all places – waiting in line at Starbucks, the airplane, the gym, parties…just keep your eyes and ears open, and make yourself available. Be yourself, but have a pitch prepared on what you want to network about.
Good luck!
Answer by loki_the_ferretreally listen to people with genuine interest, and not preparing your answer while they are still talking. It’s hard, but people really appreciate it. And if you don’t know something, honestly say so. Better be dumb for five minutes and ask then shut up and be an idiot for life.
