I am trying to read some books that are important and good during the summer.

Please give me the titles and authors of book that will help me a lot (in English and other subjects) throughout high school. (not just for entertainment)

But not so hard book. (book level 5.0-7.0)

This past Freshman year, at my school, we read:

The Odyssey
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Call of the Wild
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Romeo and Juliet

Answer by Virginia Cullen
well, i go to private school, so idk if this will help, but we use jane austen a lot. it also depends on what class you are in, for my junior lit class, we spent a lot of time on flannery oconner. Shakespeare is a given, i think we have read Shakespeare every year. to kill a mocking bird is good, and you will most likely have to read it. read pride and prejudice, it is one of my favorites, and you will need it in high school, trust me i know.

Romeo and Juliet the sparknotes printing would be useful for freshman year. My class went through a lot of poetry also- The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.
For your purposes I’d recommend Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Some schools have summer reading requirements for some of their classes. If your school has a website, they may be posted there.

I don’t really remember what books I read before/during Freshman year.. let’s see…
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott card is good; I actually read it for school too.
The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury was part of my summer reading before Freshman year.
I also like Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury, but I was assigned that a year later.

You could also stop by a used bookstore and check for old textbooks and such; you might find something you can use. ^^

You’ll most likely have a Shakespeare unit, so his plays would be good. My summer reading was Bless Me Ultima. You’ll also probably read The Odyssey, so similar epics such as The Iliad and the Aeneiad would be good. I also enjoyed The Butterfly Revolution and some of Stephen King’s works, for pleasure. The Jungle is another good book to read, but pretty boring. Try Of Mice and Men.

Well. You’ve got to ask someone from that school (walnut, high) Anyway, i’m going there this year (sophomore) and i doubt that the books will be difficult. Probably same as the above but nah… you’re gonna have to ask the school if you want to get ahead. I’ve already studied geometry and algebra cause i asked them what they’ll teach. at least i’m ahead. Hey…. maybe you’ll see me there this aug. The name’s Pat C

Try to start to get used to old English and Shakespears writing

Answer by Morgan
freshman year we read a lot of short stories but…

Romeo and Juliet – – shakespeare
Iliad – – Homer

For Summer reading we had…
whirligig – – Paul Fleischman
Night – – Elie Wiesel
Swallowing Stones – – Joyce McDonald
Witness – – Karen Hess

The Odyssey is good to look at. Shakespeare is bound to come up a fair amount (I recommend “No Fear Shakespeare” it helps a lot. I’ve actually used it when I was in a play)
