newsman: What are good motorcycle models for driving through Africa?
I have the crazy idea of driving a motorcycle from Monrovia, Liberia to the Amsterdam, the Netherlands and am looking to buy a good motorbike for these purposes. I am looking for a motorcycle that is capable on both West-African dirt roads as well as on European highways. Any advice on the motorcycle type as well as on the journey itself is highly welcome!

Both Triumph and BMW have dual purpose, big engined, on / off road bikes that will serve you well on that type of trip.
Something COMMON to Africa and Europe, so you can get parts. BMWs (especially the GS versions) are known to break down in the middle of nowhere with failed $ 3000 final drives, or drive shafts. Find out what dealers are common to find on the route you plan to take.
Looks like the Yamaha XT660 bikes (Tenere especially) would be ideal. I know that the Kawasaki KLR650 is a superb bike for round-the-world travel (old technology, easy to fix and fix with the stuff you might find on the road). But one can Make anything work, I know a guy who’s ridding RTW on a Harley rigid (no rear suspension/cruiser).
