julie: What are good entry level jobs for a criminal justice major?
I have recently obtained my bachelor’s in criminal justice but I am having trouble finding a job. I want to end up in a federal position hopefully in criminal investigations. However, I do not want to do local law enforcement. Any suggestions on where to look for eperience?

Hello. Well ill give ya some advice with entry level Criminal Investigators on the Fed. level. Secret Service, ICE, and Border Patrol are the main Federal Agencies that higher at the entry levels for Law Enforcement. Secret Service and ICE both hire Special Agents (Criminal Investigators) at the entry level. The thing is, you have to continually check USAJOBS.com to see if they have any openings. Secret Service had a bunch of openings a few months ago. ICE had a 1 day opening for SAs, but it is now closed. I heard from a friend, who is over at FLETC with ICE, that next year they are going to open recruiting and up the number of academy classes. Also usually applying with them, it may take 1-2 years to actually get called up. My friend did all the applying/interviews/testing and then almost 2 years later they called him up, asking if he was ready. So for now if your looking for some sort of experience without going LEO, then try to look for entry level insurance investigations or Loss Prevention with retail stores.
I do notice some state agencies sometimes hire entry level Special Agents at well. You didnt say where you lived, but i would search your Law Enforcement State Agencies, and check their website. Examples (atleast in Fl) Dept. of Enviromental Protection, Dept. of Financial Services, Attorney Generals Office, etc etc.
Also i wish i would have looked closer at Internships, because i notice alot of agencies have them, but its too late for me because im outta college now. Good Luck, cuz im in the same boat as you.
