While this unabashed exploitation of community knowledge inflames many of us, the question posed is indeed a worthy topic for a civil discussion.
Here is a brief answer for the benefit of casual on-lookers:
Standard English is the idea that there should only be one version of language, which is to be called standard. English variants are, by definition, non-standard versions of English. The differences are, more often than not, comprehensive, consisting of variations on multiple levels, from the bottom (phonemes) to the top (intentionality, structure of implicatures, etc.)
I am going to stop here, lest I contribute too much to the assignment.
