packersfan54: Tattooers and tattooees: Your experience with getting a tattoo on the right kind of pain meds?
Yes, I know that you are not supposed to take most kinds of pain meds because of the effects they have on your blood, and that if an artist knows you’re on meds they won’t work on you, and that many people think that if you don’t withstand the pain, you don’t deserve the tattoo, but I’m not asking for opinions, so please only serious answers about meds: Have you used pain meds when getting a tattoo in a very painful spot? Which ones are okay and how did they work? THanks
aaalright, I have tattoos, I know what it’s like, but I’m getting one on the back of my arm, which I’ve been told hurts more than other spots. I have two spanning my shoulder blades, no color, so it wasn’t so bad.

If I was already thinking that I needed pain meds,I would not even think of a tattoo.I think they are pretty, and my daughter has 2,but can you handle the pain ? Sounds like you will need a prescription RX to get through it.Talk to your Dr ???
Okay, here’s the thing. If you’ve ever had an iv inserted maximize that 10 times only with the needle going in and out of your skin 20 X faster and inserting the color at the same time. Every small area the artist has to stop and wipe the blood off of you so he/she can see what they’re doing. The bigger the tatt the more this repeats itself. After the outline is done then you’re usually numb so it helps a little. Then the color part is started. If you don’t enjoy being stuck this many times then you probably won’t want one in a painful area to begin with. I haven’t heard anything about them not doing it if you’re on meds though, I really don’t think they care one way or the other. I wasn’t taking anything while I got mine but it’s a heart on my arm, and I had it done about 30 years ago, but I’m not so sure if I would do it again. The only way to remove it later in life is as much as plastic surgery and the results sometimes really suck so think about this really hard. Once it’s there, it’s there for good. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to pain medication, but to be honest the only one that I would consider would be something to numb the area. There aren’t any side effects to worry about and you won’t have to worry about getting them in the first place. Good luck with whatever you decide and God BlessAnswer by Redfeather
*Pain meds help with inner pain, not the pain of tattooing, unless they knock you unconscious. Do not confuse pain meds with lidocaine. The lidocaine is spray pain medicine. They spray it on the skin. You see this most often when they start IV;s. Some will spray you with lidocaine first. Taking a pain pill will not help with a tattoo. Sorry.
