WonderGirl: How do they score tennis matches and how do the matches work in general?
I want to try out for my high school girls tennis team and I am a little unsure about the details of the rules.
Thanks!

Each item of play is called a point. You need 4 points to win a game, but must have a margin of at least 2. The points in a game are scored 15, 30, 40, game. If each player has 40, it’s called deuce, and some one must win 2 consecutive points from deuce to win the game. When a player wins the first point after a deuce, he is said to have the advantage. If he wins the next point, he wins the game. If the other player wins the point, then they go back to deuce until someone can gain a 2 point margin to take the game.
You need 6 games to win a set, but again with a margin of at least 2. This is why some sets can end 7-5. For most cases, if each player has won 6 games in a set, then the score is 6-6 and you go to a tiebreak. In the tie break, you must win 7 points, with a margin of at least 2. They would just keep on going in the tie break until someone wins by 2. 20-18 is the record number of points in a tie break.
In some cases, eg in the final set of a grand slam event (other than the US Open), they don’t allow tie breaks in the final set. In that case, the set goes on until someone can get a 2 game margin. Seles beat Graf 10-8 in the final set at the 1992 French Open Final.
You need 2 or 3 sets to win a match.
