Rugby League and American Football. Soccer didn’t originate from rugby as these two were one sport until the mid-1850s. Gradually the two games moved apart as different laws developed.

Rugby League formed over professionalism. In the north of England, the working class clubs wanted to pay players while the rest of the country wanted to stick with an amateur code.

Rugby was imported into the States in the 1870s by British ex-pats. Gradually a different game developed as university students with no background in rugby, made their own laws.
