According to a survey conducted by Ipsos Reid, 23% of Canadians and 37% of Americans, respectively, know that Internet gambling is illegal. Ipsos said the survey shows that authorities are doing a poor job of informing citizens that online gambling provided by foreign operators is illegal. The difference among Canadian and American responses can be explained by the fact that the US, unlike Canada, has actively prosecuted online gambling for several years now. By way of clarification, it should be noted that in Canada, as long as the government is providing the gambling services, whether online or not, it is not illegal. It’s the provision of online gambling by non-state entities that renders the activity illegal in Canada.
