: What are some things to remember when creating a holiday for a story?
I’m making a fake holiday for the story I’m writing. This is the ‘check list’ I have so far:
– Who started the holiday(?)
– Why the holiday is celebrated
– How they celebrate the holiday
– How long they’ve been celebrating the holiday
Anything to add to it? Thanks.

These may be off-shoots of the things you’ve already listed, and I don’t know how much detail you want to go into, but:
– Is it a religious holiday or was it created to commemorate something/someone (like Mother’s Day)
– Where is this holiday practiced (specific to a certain country, like Columbus Day, or celebrated around the world like Christmas)
– Is there another holiday that people celebrate in lieu of this one (for instance, Hanukkah instead of Christmas) that is for the same/similar situation or because they oppose the one that is celebrated
– Do other people celebrate it at different times (Thanksgiving in Canada is on a different day than Thanksgiving in the U.S.) depending on where they are located
– Are there any visuals for it (when I think of Valentine’s Day, I think of red and white and pink, hearts, candy, love, the price of flowers skyrocketing, etc.)
