ty P: Questions for information concerning “the market.”?
I am a college student and I have been given the topic on writing an argumentative essay on the stock market/ Investing. I am trying to narrow the topic down some and was wondering if you could give me any advice on what would be an interesting topic and would have a lot of information. ( I need to have 10 sources) I look forward to any suggestions. Thanks

If you need a lot of sources I would start looking at government websites. They have a lot of great data that is very helpful, also yahoo finance is a great source if you are looking for specific stocks to invest in.
Naked Shorts. There is plenty of information and plenty of positions on their existence and impact on the market.Answer by derobake
Well, some good all-around topics that have a lot of info are:
– The Efficient Market Hypothesis. What evidence is there that markets are efficient?
– Systematic verses nonsystematic risk (The Capital Asset Pricing Model), by Harry Markowitz.
– The failure of actively-managed mutual fund managers to match or beat their market index.
– Stock market speculative bubbles.
For more recent topics:
– The “value effect”. The findings by Eugene Fama and Kenneth French on value stocks and how they have beat growth stocks over long periods of time.
– The new “Enhanced Index Funds” verses traditional capital-weighted Index Funds https://www.investopedia.com/articles/mutualfund/07/enhanced_index.asp
– The explosive growth of ETFs and whether or not they are beneficial for investors (i.e. if investors are frequently trading ETFs and incuring transaction costs, then are they really getting a benefit verses a traditional Index mutual fund).
– The controversy over 12b-1 fees charged by many mutual funds. Are these helpful? Does a fund actually perform better the more investors it gets into the fund? i.e. is there evidence of “economies of scale” for these funds?
For good info, here are a few sources:
– My free downloadable book at and the bibliography at the back. Also, in chapter 8 I have some internet references to some academic articles
– https://www.investopedia.com
– A Random Walk Down Wall Street, by Burton Malkiel
– All About Asset Allocation, by Richard Ferri
– The Four Pillars of Investing, by William Bernstein
– The Little Book on Common Sense Investing, by Jon Bogle
– The Boglehead’s Guide to Investing
– Reseach from Eugene Fama and Kenneth French
– https://www.ifa.com/ is the site for Index Fund Advisors and should have some links to academic papers.
