Just like stocks, its how much they have changed. The Dow is an index of 30 stocks. They add up the price of one share of each and divide by a divisor. THe NASDAQ number is a composite of the price change of all the stocks on the NASDAQ exchange. The results are expressed in points, not dollars.
Dow 10,389.88 -213.27 -2.01%
It means:
When the market opened, Dow costs $ 10,603.91.
When the market closed, Dow lost -$ 213.27.
Now Dow costs$ 10,389.88.
-$ 213.27 is -2.01% of $ 10,603.91(cost of Dow when the market opened).
