nw: Problem with a roommate?
I am the one signed the lease to my 2 bedrooms apartment and rented out another room. My roommate was very messy and, we had an argument on June 11, and I kicked him out. At that time, he told me he is leaving by the end of the month. But now he is saying I have to give him 30 days notice. I know 30 days notice rule but since he is the one told me he is leaving by the end of the month, do I still have to give him 30 days notice?

Give him the 30 days, unless you have something in writing.
I personally say that you should give the “roomie” 30 days notice and let them go, this way you at least won’t get into legal trouble. But the obvious downside is putting up with them but it’s worth it in the long run! Go with the 30 🙂Answer by pnhiggins
No way! If he told you he was leaving by the end of the month he should stand by his word.Answer by DR_NC
If there is no written contract, your “roomie” is on a month-to-month tenancy. I don’t know what state you reside in, but you should check on the Attorney General’s web page to find the rules concerning termination of a rental agreement (oral). You probably need to send him a written notice telling him you are terminating your rental agreement. You may have to give him 30 days notice. I would do this by registered mail so you can later prove you sent him the notice. You need to do this tomorrow, even if he agrees to move out by the end of the month. Even if there is no contract, you must abide by the laws in your state to legally evict him. Do not resort to self help.
