Our smallest gelding is 28″ tall and supposedly was housebroken by his former owner (he pawed the door to go out.) That being said, he was never kept in the house all the time. A mini needs space to run and play; they DO get frisky and like to run and buck a little. Some minis also kick. It won’t really hurt an adult unless the mini kicks him/her in the head, but it might really injure a child.
Our little mini comes inside occasionally, but he needs little shoes (tennis shoes from Build-A-Bear or children’s shoes) or his hooves slip on the floor. Plus, keeping hay in your house would be really messy. How much land do you have….an acre or even 1/2 acre would probably be fine if you fed the mini and offered hay.
A horse isn’t a pet in the same way that a dog or cat is a pet. Minis are still horses, and many of them are built for cool/cold weather….and they enjoy cool, brisk weather. One might get too hot in a house heated for humans. You really need to look into mini-horse-care and the costs before you get a mini. Contact a reputable breeder and see what she/he says. By the way, it’s a “mini horse” (although size-wise they are technically ponies.) Some breeders are sticklers about you using the correct term.
You might also consider a mini donkey. They can be absolutely adorable and very patient and sedate.
Answer by BriI’ve noticed WAY too many people on here know NOTHING about horses (people who work with horses and, I shutter to think, OWN horses none-the-less! Poor horses…). The people asking the questions, and even the people ANSWERING the questions. It drives me batty! Some people just make my brain want to explode from how little information they really know and are trying to pawn off as fact… So, watch out! Try to use as best common sense you have, and research, research, research before you commit to ANY animal. (And I mean no offense to you, sweetheart!)
Anyway, yes it is possible to do that with a miniature horse, but you definitely want to do as much research as possible beforehand and it’s by no means easy. Horses, no matter their size, cost a lot of upkeep. They’re animals of prey, so they run when they get afraid, and kick, bite, rear, etc. when cornered. Houses really aren’t set up for the type of animal. Ponies and horses are messy, too. And it’s really more trouble than it’s worth to keep a mini indoors.
I got one helluva hoof-shaped bruise on my knee from a 3 day old mini! So be careful!
