Greenlee: How much does the PennHip exam cost in your area? And what is the average age of dogs getting it?
I am in SE lower MI. Wondering how much the PennHip exam (for dogs) will cost in different areas. What is the age of the dog(s) you took in to have it done?

I do OFA with my Golden’s and the total cost to me was 200 dollars.
With OFA the dogs hips can’t be graded until they are 2 years old. I’m not sure about Penn Hip!
Bookmom: my dogs too had to be sedated for the x-rays. Multiple angles also had to be taken and then sent off to OFA to be reviewed and graded. So I don’t think it differs that much.
Nor do I think one is better than the other either. Just a matter of preference. You can do both too if you want to.
We are in upper Mi. and when my mom had her PeenHips done it cost her 200 and her dogs had to be atleast 2 years old.Answer by bookmom
Costs seem to vary with region (and vet!) but I think they are generally more than offa because you’re having multiple radiographs done and the dog must be heavily sedated or under anesthesia. I think there is more involved than with the offa test… but you can have it done in dogs less than 1 and get accurate results unlike offa which requires the dog be 2.Answer by denverpassion30
PennHip is not cheap, however, it depends on how much your vet charges for films, etc…you will need at least 3 films to send in (they will sedate your dog also). So, it really just depends. To do those here in Indianapolis, IN it costs about $ 280.00. You can do them as early as 4 months of age. If you have a female they require you to do it within 4-6 weeks of her heat cycle as that can sway the results. PennHip is still fairly new and not accepted as much by breeders, etc…but I feel it does give good and probably more accurate results than OFA. There has been some controversy with results coming back from OFA. Just depends on who is reading the films you send to OFA. GOOD LUCK. You can not do OFA until 24 months of age.Answer by animal_artwork
I often do Penn Hip for a “preliminary” reading at a year of age… before I start serious Service Dog training. When I was in Minnesota it ran about $ 300. I haven’t done it yet in Washington… my pups turn a year on New Years Eve.. so I’ll be scheduling it soon thereafter.
Edit: You inspired me- I called around .. prices range from just over $ 300 including sedation to about $ 450.
