Just a normal pelvic exam doesn’t take but maybe 5 minutes. You lay on the bed and put your legs in the stirrups, then they have to use a tool to “open you up” a little. Then they do a vaginal swab with a long q-tip. After that, the doctor will probably “finger” you and push on your stomach at the same time to make sure there is nothing ab-normal. That’s pretty much it. It’s a little uncomfortable but nothing that hurts.
Congratulations! You’ve made the responsible decision to care for yourself and get the best medical advice. I know it’s difficult but try not to be nervous. Your doctor or nurse has had plenty of experience with patients. Be sure to let them know you are nervous and that this is your first examination. You can ask them to explain what is taking place during each step of the exam. The more you understand, the less nervous you will find yourself.
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time. When you arrive, you will need to fill out paperwork. If you state has subsidized birth control programs for the uninsured, you will want to be sure to fill out the necessary paperwork. I live in Pennsylvania and used PP when I was laid off. I was able to get 3 free months of BC between the time I was out of work.
After you paperwork you will have your height, weight, ect measured. You may be asked to give a urine sample at this time.
A nurse or assistant will review your medical history once you are led to an examination room. Then you will see the doctor. Don’t be surprised when a nurse of assistant stays for the examination. The actual exam can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes.
Exams may differ depending on your body and doctor. Most exams are done with you undressing from the waist down. Some gynecologists will also perform a breasts test to check for lumps, ect. You will place your feet in the stirups. The doctor will gently insert a finger to be sure that everything is normal.
The actual amount of time you spend at the appointment may vary on your individual needs. After the doctor examines you, you will dress. After dressing the doctor will return and discuss a plan that best suites your body and lifestyle.
Keep in mind, this is your first appointment. It may take a little longer than future appts. Each planned parenthood differs a bit. The best way to find out what your clinic is like is to visit your local Planned Parenthood website. Most have a What to Expect page.
