Tammy N: What happens to newborn puppies if their mom leaves them for awhile ?
I just got some answers saying that i should let the mom dog leave her puppies sometimes. But would anything bad happen to the puppies if she leaves?
Oh yeah and can i hold the puppies ? Or would the bacteria cause them to have diseases. I’ve been told that i wasn’t able to hold them for a few weeks.
And yes , the mom dog does trust me to even get near her babies.

Animal babies do something called imprinting. Imprinting is the attachment to a mother during a short period after birth. If animals are refused that time, they do not imprint and later have emotional problems. They also may have difficulty feeling a connection with anyone the rest of their lives (theory on animals, sure for humans). My advice is to keep them with their mother for now.
Its fine for her to go to outdoors to pee/poop and stretch her legs.
She should pretty much stay in your fenced yard only. She could always bring bacteria in to them, which is why you have to be cautious.
You can touch the pups if she will let you, but you shouldn’t be manhandling them. Petting lightly is fine. Picking them up and carrying them around is not.
In 8 weeks, when the pups are weaned, have her spayed.

Puppies are not able to regulate their body heat until they are 2 to 3 weeks old. If the mom leaves for an extended period of time, the puppies will die. Moms body heat is necessary to keep the pups warm. But if mom needs to briefly go outside to the bathroom, eat or drink, they will be fine.
After a few weeks it would be alright to briefly hold the pups, but I would just leave them alone unless it is necessary to touch them.

Seriously? The mother should leave the pups for only short periods of time. To go to the bathroom, eat, etc…She should be confined to the whelping room unless she is outside on a leash and be able to get in and out of the whelping box when she feels like it, but kept in that room. You should be weighing each puppy twice a day and keeping track. In order to do this, you must hold them. Puppies are not ducks. They do not “imprint” on humans and think of them as their mommy. It is better to socialize them early and often. If the mother won’t tolerate it then it must be done when she is out to potty. I’m guessing since you know so very little about whelping a litter that the best thing for all concerned is to NOT DO IT AGAIN.
