Jessica: How should a mother discipline their six year old child when they do somthing wrong?
My six year old nephew spit on a girl’s face at school one day and his mother took his video games and his VHS tapes away from him and told him he could not have them back until he respects girls. How should I stop her from discipling her child? My sister and her husband stay on to him all the time.

What’s wrong with taking all his video games and VHS tapes? I would do that, as well as make him write an essay about respect, which I made my son do at that age. Spitting in someone’s face is a serious offense. If he were an adult, he could be arrested and charged with assault for spitting in someone’s face. He is not your son and it sounds like they got it under control, so really you need to let them parent their own child.

My son is 6 and with him, most offenses get one warning and opprotunity to shape up, and then he gets a 10 minute time out. (6 minutes doesnt really phase him) If he continues to misbehave, he is sent to his room for half an hour to think about better behaviors. There are some behaviors that are ‘zero tolerance’ like hitting. if he does something that causes harm to others or himself there are no warnings for that behavior, he is sent straight to his room. He also gets “grounded” to the house, no playing at the playground, during warm months for things like misbehaving at school or improper behavior at the playground. however, this has only happened once. He was grounded for 3 days.

in response to your question, you SHOULDNT stop them from disciplining their child. taking away priveledges is a perfectly reasonable punishment. It would be doing him a huge disservice to let him think he can get away with spitting in someones face because his behavior will only get worse if it is not stopped now. it is a parents responsibility to ‘stay on’ their kids all the time.

I think that is an appropriate punishment for a child who spit on another child. His mother and father did the right thing, taking away things he loves until he learns his lesson and rewarding him with having those things back when he does learn his lesson. Anyway, its none of your business if you are just the aunt, it is your sister and her husbands child, not yours. I would mind your own business, they can raise there child however they like, and unless they are physically or mentally harming him… stay out of it.

I probably dont know what is right but what has been done is wrong.

giving punishment never resolves the problem it will only teach him to make mistake n not get caught.

one has to get to the root cause why did he spit in first place, how he learnt this act and then after some days one should reason out with him

he should be told stories about problems(fictious) of people who do such misdeeds

he should be explained by example and stories that what he did other day was wrong

i know its a long process and time consuming and also requires patience but then who said its easy to bring up brilliant kids……….

How will she know he ever respects girls? He sure should not spit at anyone, and taking away things is fine, however, they must stay on him to shape his butt up I think! It’s good you care, but you should also try to help him with his problem!!

Answer by Dr M. Riad
A person came to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Who among the people is most deserving my companionship (of a kind treatment from me?) He said: Your mother. He, again, said: Then who (is the next one)? He said: It is your mother (who deserves the best treatment from you). He said: Then who (is the next one)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: It is your mother. He (again) said: Then who? Thereupon he (The Prophet (peace be upon him)) said: It is your father.
