Anonymous: Just curious: Is there any pet store out there that gets animals from good breeders instead of puppy mills?
I’ve heard all the bad things about puppy stores and pet stores and how they get doggies from puppy mills and/or backyard breeders. Mix mutts and everything bad has happened and all horrible facts about pet shops.
So my question: is there ever a legitimate pet store out there? Can some pet stores get puppies/dogs from good breeders for less and sell them? Are all pet stores horrible when it comes to selling a dog?
gosh i am not gonna get a freakin pup from the pet store. i am gonna get it from a reputable breeder

There are so many unwanted dogs out there today looking for a good loving home, and a second chance at life…
Answer by NandinaNo reputable breeder would let their puppies be sold in a pet store.
Chains like PetSmart and PetCo will allow Rescue Groups to come in and hold adoptions, but that’s different, because it’s the group doing the work and the screening of the adopting family.
If you’re looking to get a dog, DO NOT get one from a pet store. Find a REPUTABLE breeder, or better yet, adopt from Rescue and save a life!

As the above users have stated, no reputable breeder would even set foot inside a pet store that sells dogs, much LESS allow their own pups to be sold there…Answer by believer
I don’t really consider these “pet stores” per se, but some people do. PetCo and Petsmart are two chains that I have seen take in “extra” cats from the local shelters. They often have doggie day where they run the shelter adoption out of the store. There are also smaller private stores that do this as well. My mom adopted two cats from a petstore that houses “overflow” from the local Animal Rescue operation in our town. Be sure to ask where the animals came from – if it’s from the local rescue or animal shelter, you will know, there will be signs everywhere. And the form that you fill out will be the rescue’s form.Answer by Beautiful1
There are a few who do get their puppies from breeders but a good breeder would NEVER sell a dog to someone who is just going to resell it for profit. Good breeders want to know who their pups are going to. In my own contract, the new owner has to agree to never sell or give away any puppy they buy from me. In the case that they can no longer keep the dog, it MUST come back to me and no there is no refunds. This is to insure that my puppies never end up in an already overcrowded humane society.Answer by Kira M
Actually there are pet stores out there that get there puppies locally, and not from a puppy mill. There are two pet stores where I live that get there puppies from local breeders. Probably not on big cities though. But humane pet stores DO exist out there.Answer by jhg
Yes, there are some pet stores that do get thier dogs from good breeders. But most breeders would prefer to sell thier dogs independantly because they can actually make more money that way, and they know exactly where thier dogs are going. When sold to a pet store you won’t make as much per puppie and most important you don’t have a clue who has bought your puppy.Answer by Ellen S
A good breeder wouldn’t let their pups be sold to an unscreened buyer. Period.Answer by Kari_ Polman
