Horses Haven is a really good rescue! I donate to them all the time and I live in michigan too =) I have been to their barn an it is very nice and they treat their horses well.

Check out their website to have a look! Im sure they have a lot of horses that aren’t too expensive! Good luck, your doing a great thing!
Oh and the best horse for a beginner is a quiet one, one that is well trained and that knows what it’s doing– Often quarter horses are really good breeds for beginners b.c they are usually quiet but i have seen the occasional hot QH! I can help you if you want!
Answer by Andraya MYes, there are horse rescue groups in MI. My mom got a wonderful horse from CANTER, who deals with ex-racehorses. Their MI website is www.canterusa.org/michigan/ Foals or colts are generally NOT available form CANTER.
The best type of horse for a beginner is an older one. Sure, there are many different breeds that are exceptional, but you really want a horse that’s “been there, done that.”
If you’ve taken riding lessons, you might ask about leasing a horse from the stable where you ride. This can be a great way to go, and I know of a couple of folk who have later gone on to purchase the horse they leased. Leasing allows you all the fun of having the horse, but you don’t have to worry about vet or farrier bills, and it gives you an idea of what you’ll be getting into.
Good luck on finding your dream horse!
Answer by daisykjYou can search for free horses on www.equine.com. This horse is a show horse, the owner is offering a cheap or free lease, where you would be able to use the horse. Just do an advanced search on this type of website for horses less than $ 100 in your area. You’ll find something.

Answer by jessanderinThere is a racehorse adoption facility in Saline Michigan, check out www.horseadoption.com. However, their policy is to NOT adopt to first-time horse owners because they feel that ex-racehorses need to have an owner that already has some horse experience. Many of the horses are completely free, but you have to consider the high cost of keeping the horse.
If you’ve never had a horse of your own before, I would not recommend an ex-racehorse. They are too high-strung and complicated. There is a good website with horses for sale, www.equine.com. They actually have the horse’s temperament rated from 1 to 10, with 1 being a very quiet and calm horse.
Good luck!
