: Is religion the single largest cause of moral and scientific stagnation in history?
That is the question.
In simpler words, do you believe that religion is the largest cause of primitive morals and primitive scientific beliefs holding on for so long? Do you believe religion is the single largest cause of hatred in the human race?
As an atheist, I view religion as both good and bad. It is good for keeping people positive and happy (they feel they have something to fall back on/ someone who always loves them) as well as bad because it divides people and has obstructed the advancement of humans in so many ways – including, but not limited to, the two aforementioned ways.

We will probably never know, but religion was a large contributor. People thought that everything could be explained when you bring God into the equation.
Christian morals aren’t too different from Kantian theory of Ethics, and you have to be very bold or very stupid to call Kant’s ethics primitive.
As far as hindering science, some religious groups certainly have, like the medieval Roman Catholic church or modern Fundamentalist churches, but it’s irrational to punish all of religion for a select few of its adherents.

Regarding scientific stagnation.
It was actually the Christian belief in a rational creator that provided the fundamental modern scientific axiom of an ordered universe; that the laws of the universe are consistent in both space and time. No other belief system justifies this assumption (including atheism). The absence of this assumption is the reason scientific advancement stalled in ancient cultures (like Greek and Chinese). It’s also the reason that the founders of most modern scientific disciplines were Christians.
Regarding moral stagnation.
The concept that morality can be redefined is an exclusively atheistic idea. Atheism provides no absolute foundation for atheistic morals. To be consistent with atheism, you have to determine that morality is relative. You have your morals, someone else has their morals. There is no objective foundation of right and wrong. There is, in fact, no such thing as real morality.
Whereas religious faith deals with morals more consistently. If there is such thing as right and wrong, then it is so regardless of the prevailing paradigms of popular culture. Faith in a supernatural God provides a foundation for moral absolutes. Without these absolutes, all morality is relative.
