: Is it illegal to rent a house then rent out individual rooms for a profit?
I found out today that my fake landlord/owner is actually just a guy who rented out the house I’m living in for $ 1800 for a 4 bedroom house, and rents out 3 rooms for $ 2100 and gets his own room for free. Is this legal?

Sounds like this person might be subleasing to you illegally.

No it is not. There are 2 issues, one sub-leasing, he has to have a contract with the owner to do that. If he is doing that he needs to be paying income tax on all of the rent he is collecting. Turn him in to the IRS and your state. Tax evasion is a crime.

The other issue is that he has made this a boarding house, which requires the same zoning as a motel.
