talon: Is Graphic Design/digital advertising a good career choice?
I’m 18 years old and its crunch time for me to decide on what I want to do with my life. I really like doing this kind of stuff but just wanted to know if its a good field to get into (i.e. money, security, stability. etc.)

It can be. Sometimes graphic design can be a hard field to break into, sometimes the jobs are scarce. I think it depends on location, if you live in a small place, jobs are harder to find.
As for money, security, stability, it all depends on what type of companies you work for, small design firms typically don’t pay too much. Most of the money is made working for ad agencies or companies that have in-house designers (for example working for someone like a bank that has it’s own in house design team).
However, usually, when you work for places that have more stablility and offer more money, the jobs typically tend to be less creative because you’re doing more corporate type design (like doing brochures, flyers, etc) whereas working for a smaller design firm has more creativity, but because they’re small, they typically can’t compete salary-wise with bigger companies. So it’s always make money but no creativity vs. less money but get more creative projects.
Also, a lot of people have misconceptions that in order to be a graphic designer, you just have to be good in art. That’s not true. Good graphic designers are well rounded, we have to have good communication skills, good at English because we’re always constantly doing research, and good at math.
But I think, if you love design you should go for it. Making money is important, but I think being happy and content with your job is much more important.
Hope that helps..good luck
