Viridistori: Is buying an apartment and renting it out illegal?

Answer by Landlord
Not in the US.
It is called “subletting”, and it is not illegal. One should, however, arrange it with one’s landlord first. Could be some sticky dealings, otherwise.Answer by jimbo
Generally speaking of course not, but there may be exceptions such as buying in a covenanted building where it is in the deed that owners only can live there or it may be for retired people and then you cannot rent to families. But a ordinary apartment without any covenants such as the examples I have given, then you should be OK.
Bye the way, you renting would not be criminally illegal, but may give rise to an action from the owners committee.Answer by bizmom
No it is not… However, if you live in the US. You need to be very careful how you buy it. Because if your main purpose is to buy it and rent it out, than it is investment property so you want to make sure you buy it as such. Unless you buy it and live in it for a while, than rent it out, than it would be your primary residence first.Answer by Gertie
