If it is, I would imagine that they would be required to allow someone with vision “correctable to 20/20” as well. Otherwise it sounds like disability discrimination to me. If you can see 20/20 with contacts or glasses, I can’t imagine it would be an issue.
To fly as a commercial or airline pilot you need 20/20 or better distant vision, and 20/40 or better near vision in each eye. The standard can be met with or without lenses (glasses or contacts), but if you need lenses to meet the standard there will be a restriction on your medical certificate stating you need to have those lenses to fly.
To fly as a private pilot, you need 20/40 or better distant and near vision in each eye. Again you can use lenses for correction.
More specifically, you need a Class 1 medical certificate to be an airline pilot, a Class 2 medical certificate for other commercial piloting, and a Class 3 medical certificate to fly as a private pilot. The standards for each class are found in Part 67 of the Federal Aviation Regulations as listed below.
