gusjohnsondunk: In the Bible – in Genesis 38 : 6-9 Onan uses a primitive method of birth control – commonly called “coitus?
interruptus.” Because he did not want to father a child he disengages from his wife Tamar just before he ejaculates and “spilled his semen on the ground.” God is displeased at his actions and kills him. What does this passage say about the suitability of the Bible as a moral guide for the modern world?

thats the old testament… the new testament explicitly says NOT to use the old testament as a moral guide in the modern world… read the rest of the book before posting non-sense
In this story, because onan was supposed to father a child by his dead brother’s wife, in order to carry on the brother’s line, but instead “pulled out” to avoid it. God was pissed in this story because onan was shirking his duties, not because of the actual pulling out.Answer by mitchellfrank15
I have a B.th in theology…without the context you have a pretext.
The issue is not about birth control…it is about failure of family responsibility Read a little farther…
“Have sexual relationship with your dead brothers wife….”
There was no welfare of social services in ancient times so there were tribal laws to make sure a family member “kinsman redeemer” would step in and help. With no male hairs a widow would have no support. Onan being the brother should have got Tamar pregnant, supplied for her house hold and raised the child until manhood so the son would take his deceased fathers name and that child and provide for this mother. Proverbs says “That a man that neglects his family is worse than a infidel.” So its not about birth control but neglect of family God kills Onan…..which in my opinion the pig deserved.
