zzz2135: If I want to start buying herbal supplements, where do I start?
I want to start buying/using herbal supplements for me and my family in the place of common medicines. So I want to know where to start and what to buy for things like headaches, colds, menstrual discomfort, stress reliever and that sort of stuff. I have done some research only but there are some many different herbs that I would like someone to narrow it down for me 🙂 Thanks! All help is appreciated!

I’d recommend first avoiding any spam… herbal supplements are a hot bed for scam artists to make a website and claim to sell fad herbs at inflated prices. Buy only from websites you know and trust or from your local health food stores.
As far as finding the information, there are many good books out there that give good information about herbs and whatnot. I’d start with Prescription for Nutritional Healing… it’s by Balch and Balch and is as big as a large phone book so it’s got TONS of good info. I have that as one of my main reference books and it’s starting to get rather torn up around the edges. LOL!
There are a lot of options out there for herbs and supplements, but be aware that different people do respond differently to different things (same is true for foods and drugs as well)… just because something doesn’t work as well for you doesn’t mean it won’t work better for someone else (and vice versa… so friend’s advice on which supplement to take isn’t always the best answer). Good luck and I hope I helped!
Check out some library books about herbs and read up on them. Swanson Health Products has herbs and vitamins for a reasonable price.Answer by dave
Unfortunately the vast bulk of them have little or no effect. What you may have seen is the result of the supplement industry who push ineffective herbal mixtures for all manner of assorted ailments. The fact is that if this stuff worked then you’d be recommended it by your doctor; after all a handful of dried plant matter is a heck of a lot cheaper than the $ 900 million it takes to get a drug to market!
If you spend your time improving your diet it’ll have a far greater impact than all those fake pills. But if you really need to take any drugs, stick to those that work. I’m sure if a family member has a bad migraine they’re not going to thank you for prolonging their agony with some scam pill, when proven aspirin will give them much needed relief!
Answer by TinkI would pick up calcium – good for heartburn, AND menstral cramps (heartburn as needed – calcium 1200 mgs a day, everyday – demonstrated over and over to work well for cramps)
Headaches – aspirin is the much safer version of white willow bark – if you can take aspirin, I would use that.
Colds – chicken soup, so long as you are not a vegetarian.
