Divalicious: Husband and I live in different states. Can we file our federal taxes jointly and our state taxes separate?
The reason I ask is because he is in WA state, and they are tax exempt. I am in VA. When my taxguy did our state taxes we were owing $ 1300 because of this. When I asked him to do the state separately he said that is not possible. Is that true? My husband is in the military.

Is your husband a legal resident of WA? If not, he should file to his state of residence regardless of his assignment location.
Your husband must file in his state of legal residence regardless of where he’s stationed. If he’s domiciled in VA, then he must file in VA so you would normally file a joint return to pay the least tax.
When I was stationed in VA about 28 years ago they did allow military couples to file separate returns even if they filed jointly on their Federal return. You’ll have to check with the VA DOR to see if they still allow that. If they do, figure your taxes both ways and file whatever’s cheapest for you.
